In scenarios where there is a significant temperature difference exceeding 50°C between the shell and the heat exchange tubes, thermal stress—commonly known as heat stress—could pose a potential risk.

To address these concerns, it is crucial to install expansion joints on the shell, which help in maintaining the pressure within safe limits, effectively preventing potential damage. This design excellently suits applications where the shell side fluid remains clean and non-scaling, where the temperature differential between the two fluids is minimal, or if pronounced, when the shell side pressure is well-regulated.
