In scenarios where the temperature difference between the shell and the heat exchange tubes exceeds 50°C, thermal stress can be destructive.

To counter this issue, expansion joints should be considered in the shell, which will help in limiting shell side pressure to avoid any potential damage. It is best suited for use with clean, non-scaling shell side fluids, especially when the temperature differential is manageable, or if the shell side pressure remains low.
