This design not only ensures effortless cleaning of the tube interiors but also optimizes space utilization. A minor limitation is the inability to mechanically clean the shell side. Additionally, when experiencing a substantial temperature variance (>50°C) between the shell and the heat exchange tubes, destructive thermal stress (or heat stress) may arise.
To effectively counteract potential stress issues, the integration of expansion joints on the shell is essential. This strategy keeps the shell side pressure in check, thus safeguarding against potential damage. Perfectly suited for scenarios involving clean, non-scaling fluids within the shell side, the design excels where temperature differences between fluids are minor or where the shell side pressure remains moderate.
