Moreover, a substantial temperature difference exceeding 50°C between the shell and heat exchange tubes can lead to detrimental thermal stress, often termed heat stress.

To counteract this, expansion joints are integral for the shell, effectively managing pressure to avert potential damage. This architectural choice is ideal for scenarios where the shell side contains clean, non-scaling fluids, the temperature difference between the interacting fluids remains moderate, or if there is a significant disparity, the pressure on the shell side is not elevated.
