In situations where the temperature difference between the shell and the heat exchange tubes exceeds 50°C, thermal stress can pose a significant risk.

To counteract potential damage from thermal stress, expansion joints are meticulously installed on the shell, effectively capping the pressure within the shell side. This makes the design perfect for situations where the shell side fluid is pristine and free from scaling, and where the temperature differential or shell side pressure isn't excessively high.
